Some people might not realize the purpose of having a truck horn. It isn’t to honk and scare annoying vehicles on the road. It isn’t to impress young kids as you pass by. Though both can be equally fun and satisfying, neither is the reason of the truck horn.
The purpose of the truck horn is for safety. The actual use of a truck horn is to warn pedestrians and other vehicles on the road of potential danger. It is also too used to grab the attention of others working in the same area as you. Think of it like a train, they blow their whistle at every crossing regardless if there are lights and drop arms or not.
You should try to refrain from being obnoxious with your truck horn by using it too often or too long, but at the same time remember it is better to be safe than sorry. So if you’re planning on backing or are operating in a busy lot, a quick tap will get everyone’s attention without coming across as rude.
