A cement truck, often referred to as a cement mixer, is a heavy-duty vehicle used in the construction industry. They carry ready-mixed concrete to building or construction sites. The mixer truck features a mixing drum and specialised mixing mechanisms. Concrete is mixed inside the rotating drum.

Batch Mixers
With a batch concrete mixer, the ingredients for one batch are placed, mixed and discharged before another batch is introduced. They can handle large volumes of cement slurry, with the two most popular types being drum type mixers and pan type mixers.
● Drum Type Mixers
The materials are mixed in a drum which rotates to mix the concrete together before discharging it. There are three main types of drum concrete mixer. These are:
Tilting drum mixer: The concrete is discharged by the drum tilting downwards. This is a rapid process that's used for larger projects
Non-tilting drum mixer: Rather than tilting, the drum rotates on its horizontal axis. This type of concrete mixer is generally used for small projects as the discharge is slower.
Reversing drum mixer: The drum has two openings, one for pouring and one for discharge. The drum rotates in one direction for mixing and in the opposite direction for discharging
There is also a transit concrete mixer truck which mixes the aggregates in a drum whilst also being able to transport the concrete to the site.
● Pan Type Mixers
This type of concrete mixer consists of a pan in which the concrete is mixed using blades which are arranged into a star shape. Either the blades rotate while the pan stays static, or the pan rotates while the blades stay static. Either way this is an efficient process for mixing concrete.

Continuous Mixers
A continuous concrete mixer will be used for large scale projects such as building bridges, dams or skyscrapers. As the name suggests, the loading, mixing and discharging of the mix is done continuously, rather than in batches, until the work is complete. Screw feeders are used to load the materials. The mixers consist of on-tilting drums with screw type blades that spin in a constant motion in the middle of the drum. The drum is tilted downwards towards the opening and the mixing time is determined by its tilt.

Daily
Check mixer is empty before starting in the morning.
Ensure there is no waste concrete on the floor or walls of the mixer. Remove build up if necessary.
Operate high pressure wash each time an extended break in production occurs.
Clean out mixer with high pressure washer and wand at end of daily operation.
Check to see discharge chute is also clean.
Check cement weigh hopper discharge valve is clear of buildup via the inspection panel on the base of the weigh hopper.
When cleaning any build-up on mixer arms, mixing blades, scraper blades, and wall and floor tiles, do not use metal hammers as these items are cast iron and therefore brittle. Use a plastic head hammer.
Ensure that door seal track is clear of buildup.

Weekly
Check clearance between the mix blades and the floor of the mixer. Adjust to approximately 3 mm clearance, if necessary, by adjusting mixer blade height.
Check clearance between wall scraper blades and wall tiles. Adjust to just clear wall tiles on the circumference.
Rotate the mixer by hand to check clearance on all floor and wall tiles before starting the machine after adjustment. Always check bolt tightness after any adjustments.
Grease all nipples on top of the fixed gearbox. Use a single dose of Texaco Multifak MP2 grease, UNI XM grade, or equivalent. Do not over grease.
Check the hydraulic oil level in the power pack tank using the sight glass. This should not require topping up unless there is a leak in the system.
Check drive belt tension and condition of high pressure washer. Adjust if necessary.
Check the condition of wall and floor tiles for wear or damage. Casting blow holes can be ignored. When tile thickness reaches approximately 5 mm, change the full set of either wall or floor tiles as necessary.
Use a wire brush to clean high pressure washer spray heads to remove and cement/concrete build up which may block nozzles.

Monthly
Check the condition of the discharge door seal and replace it if leakage is occurring.
Check the oil level in the gearboxes. Use the dipstick on the fixed gearbox and the overflow plug on the rotating gearbox. Do not overfill either box. The oil level in the fixed box should just be up to the dipstick base. The oil may seem emulsified, but this is not water contamination and is a normal appearance for this oil (ROL EP150 or equivalent). The gearboxes should not use oil and if a reduction in level is noted it indicates leakage and should be investigated.
Check oil level on high pressure water pump. Top up as necessary to sight gauge marker.
